I’ve just downloaded Waze into my latest car and it’s completely new to me. I read on a number of forums and pages that Waze is a ‘preferred’ app so I thought I’d give it a try.
My last car, a Toyota Corolla TS, gave speed camera warnings even when not in a planned route. Hopefully Waze will give me something similar or maybe even better.

One of my daughters uses it, even though her car has built in sat nav. She swears by it and she’s a police officer! It shows you speed cameras (which my built in sat nav also does) but users input info about hazards or things to look out for on their routes, so as to warn other users.
She gave me a lift home from hospital the other day so I was able to see it in action. When we were on the motorway it warned us of a stationary car in the hard shoulder and as we passed it a box popped up to ask if the hazard was still there (yes or no). I tapped on yes (as it was) but presumably if I’d clicked ‘no’ the warning would have been cancelled for other users.
It’s not perfect as it depends on the accuracy of user input. For example, twice it warned us on Police on the motorway, but it was actually traffic officers (civilian) who deal with breakdowns etc and have no powers to measure speed, issue tickets etc. This is a common confusion with many road users who don’t know the difference (if you don’t, Police are yellow and blue check, traffic officers yellow and dark grey check – looks black).
My daughter says that it’s worth altering the settings to simplify the displays and only focus on critical info. For example, the default setting shows you the location of other Waze users, which is of no use and just distracting.
September 8, 2024 at 2:38 pm #288121Whilst I do use Waze. I find it annoying sometimes. It doesn’t give me an option of “fuel saving route” just the fastest. For example; been doing a regular journey to a destination for 2 years and only just found out (more fool me 🤣) that if I use the alternate non motorway route it would save me around 40% mileage. Albeit a rather short route overall. 40miles vs 28. Still a massive difference. Especially when I barely get 40 miles for a tenner petrol.

That makes a lot of sense. There always seems to lots of other users shown on the maps.-

Fisherman's Friends, Glastonbury 2024September 8, 2024 at 4:05 pm #288126Its very good. It re-routes you around stopped traffic and jams.
Try it, and compare it to the built in satnav. Then decide if it works for you.

Does the built in Hyundai Sat Nav not do that as well? My BMW did but I haven’t hit any major traffic problems in the Hyundai yet to know. One thing that impressed me with the Hyundai system the other day, that my BMW didn’t do, is that when in an ‘average speed camera zone’ it displays a running average speed that you’ve travelled at within the zone from when you entered it until you finally leave. Clever stuff.

It doesn’t know the difference unfortunately it only gives you police or police hidden, many people put hidden police when it is a speed van, the reason most police use it, when someone puts on the map police reported ahead the police themselves hit not there and take the alert of your screen. Ask her how many times she has done that😂

I appreciate that the Waze system can’t differentiate, my point was that it’s a shame that so many of the general public mistake highways agency vehicles as police cars and mark them as such, causing people to react unnecessarily.
My daughter is a response officer and tells me that they have no time to deal with traffic issues – other than accidents and drink / drug drivers – so I can’t imagine that she has time to mess around with Waze when tearing around on blue lights at high speeds!

No it doesnt. The in built Hyundai satnav tried to direct me into a 2 mile long traffic jam I had passed 20 mins before. I passed the jam at the end of my destination. The return trip 10 mins later wanted to put me in that jam. After it did that a couples of times, I went looking for an alternative, I just could not trust it after that.
That is why I started using Waze.
September 8, 2024 at 6:13 pm #288138If using Waze, am I correct in thinking it won’t pre-condition your battery if you enter a charge stop. Anyone know if you can manually pre-condition on the Enyaq if you are using Waze as satnav?

Hyundai/Kia’s that use the latest Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) system can help you avoid traffic jams, by useing real-time traffic information to suggest alternative routes and keep you moving efficiently.
Currently thats the Kona, Tuscon and Santa Fe. The refreshed i5 and i6 will also get it.

I believe you can manually pre-condition the batter on the Enyak in the settings.

It does give you option of various routes, you just need to ask it for the alternatives. Besides after doing a regular trip for 2 years you shouldn’t need the satnav to advise you of a shorter route?
September 8, 2024 at 8:46 pm #288147I use Waze all the time as it gives you the best warnings for police, breakdowns, potholes, congestion, diversions, alternative routes etc.
It won’t precondition the battery on my Hyundai, you need to use the built in satnav for that.
September 9, 2024 at 9:26 am #288153I know some will think I am mad but I pay the £20 for the TomTom app. I have found it the most accurate for traffic and more importantly road closures, especially at night. I also prefer the interface that shows any upcoming delays and possible quicker routes.
I run Waze in the background and it does indeed still give me the warnings for police/cameras etc over my speakers.

Fisherman's Friends, Glastonbury 2024September 9, 2024 at 11:46 am #288160Just for info… Waze is part of Google Maps so they both have access to the same information but just package it differently
September 9, 2024 at 11:56 am #288161The thing I always liked on Waze was the speedo, particularly for an accurate reading on long 50 mph sections on motorways. I was flabbergasted the other week when my daughter connected her phone to my car and her google maps had the speedo feature, seems this is something apple are rolling out. (Apparently this was always available on Android but never on Apple)

Android’s platform, has always been superior to Apple in what it/you can acheive and AA is no exception, which is propably why Android holds a bigger market share than Apple.
September 9, 2024 at 1:04 pm #288170I’ve swore by Waze for years, it is true google bought them out and slowly started pulling the best of into google maps but I still find Waze does it better overall. Very quick to update their maps as well if you report a change or road closure.
