Got back yesterday from a 2 week Med cruise with my ex-wife. Marella Explorer 2, we were on their Discovery 2 Xmas week.
I’d have to say we found this ship somewhat poor, beds were thin and hard, couldn’t get a stable cabin temperature, toilet failed 4 times etc. etc. The air quality in the cabin was definetly poor, both of us came down with sore throats. coughing etc. after about the 3rd day onboard (more on that shortly!).
The food was ok but disaappointing, main dinng restaurants had the exact same menus we’d had in December, and repeated them again the second week. Buffet restaurant varied between edible and very poor. I think I mentioned on the last cruise trip that I lost about 1/2 a stone over the week? this time I managed to more than double that! (again more to follow!).
After a week onboard we reurned to Palma, we had plans to go off up to Alcudia for lunch, we’d previously been there and met a very nice Welshman called Lloyd who has a really good place there (best fish & chips on Mallorca!). However, after taking over an hour to get from the cruise terminal into Palma using the appaling EMT bus service I was absolutely knackered and we had to head back to the ship.
From there things went downhill fast, next day I was in the Med-Bay and given about 3L of assorted IV fluids and antibiotics etc. etc. until they eventually let me back out!. They reckon it was an Asthma induced chest infection (not had an acutal asttma attack for over 20 years, it’s very well controlled) We both said it was something on the ship.
First night back in the cabin I did not sleep at all, next day I had to be wheelchaired back to the Med-Bay. Same again, 3 bags of various IV stuff and was told if I didn’t improve they’d be putting me ashore in Civitavecchia (Rome) and off to hospital. Luckily I picked up enough to be let out.
Talking to other passengers we found out that there were a lot of them with the same or very similar sories, a few days onboard followed by sore throats, coughing, lack of appetite etc. I think that as we had stayed on for the second week when most had got off I got a bigger dose of whatever it was going round.
Now back home and my ex is coming down with the same thing, she started feeling unwell about the same time I did but didn’t get as bad as I did, now looks like she’s going that way, she’s at her docs later today.
Med-Bay doc reckons I need my Beta Blocker increasing as my sitting heart rate was about 120-125 a few times they checked it. Can’t get an appointment with my GP will have to ring again at 8am tomorrow.
So a great time was had by all!, she wanted to see Rome and Pompeii but ended up not being able to do either! and I’ve a nice collection of massive bruising where the various IV lines were put in!, not the holiday keepsake I was looking for!.
Just to add the cherry to the cake, picked the Enyaq up from Newcastle airport premium drop off and no Blue Badge !!! Asked in the office and no, we would never remove it for any reason. Bollocks, I know for a fact it was in the car the night before we drove to the airport as I’d been out shopping to stock up for my Autistic son who has been cat sitting here while I was away.
Now I know it was there as he has a great memory and knows exactly where we parked at Tesco, Iceland Lidl etc. that night, in the disabled parking bays and there is no way I would ever park in there without having my Blue Badge with me and stuck in the window. I’ve advised my local council and am waiting for their reply. I’ve checked the car 3 times, it’s really not easy to miss as it’s in a large red fold out holder, lives under the centre tunnel bit where there’s a nice space for it.
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!
