RaceCattOk its driving me mad. I didn’t get adaptive cruise control on the car I’ve order due to the price. Am I really missing that much? (If I am that’ll be an option come the next renewal).

RhodgieNice to have but not a huge deal if you don’t…. like dual zone climate control or a sunroof… nice but not a deal breaker
March 3, 2020 at 3:50 pm #108291I had Adaptive CC on my previous car, VW Golf, and only used it twice for a few minutes and just couldn’t get used to it and I couldn’t help having my foot hovering over the brake as to me it always seem to brake a bit late for my liking.
The distant between you and the car in front could be adjusted but with our over crowded roads if it was too long a gap on motorways cars would just butt into the gap having me jumping for the brake. To be fair I didn’t give myself a chance to get use to it and didn’t help that the controls were on the left-hand side of the steering wheel so I have to let go of the wheel to adjust it or turn it on and off because of my disability.
I know there’s loads on here who love ACC but its not something on my short list and even though I have standard CC on my current car I’ve never ever switched it on.

DesSomething I’ve looking on my next car which I think will be the Hyundai IONIQ se l.
March 3, 2020 at 4:25 pm #108293I had adaptive cruise on my previous car, it was wonderful cruising at 81mph along the french motorways hour after hour, it was OK on some of the british motorways in the north, but utterly hopeless on the M25.
Current car doesn’t have it & I don’t miss it. If the next car comes with it as standard then fine, but I’m not paying extra for it.
March 3, 2020 at 4:59 pm #108303
PhiljbIve had it on previous cars and use it all the time on motorway and find it works especially well on the M25.
Trust the car but obviously still pay attention and you’ll arrive feeling much more relaxed.
Just set it up to suit the road conditions and it’s great.March 3, 2020 at 5:38 pm #108311I have used cruise control for the last 25+ years (most HGV’s have had it for decades) and now due to disability I can’t have a car without it, paid extra for ACC on my new car and wish I could turn it off and just have normal cruise back, it leaves too big a gap on motorways even when set to it’s closest setting, when coming up behind a vehicle while doing 70 the distance at which it starts to apply the brakes is huge so you end up pulling out into the next lane about 6=7 hundred yards before you get near, I find I’m constantly feathering the throttle to keep it closer to the car in front when in the outside lane otherwise it brakes and leaves a big gap that everybody else just pulls into.
Normal cruise for me next time and going to see if I can get someone to turn it off for me in the meantime.

gillani use it every time i drive. its especially great through the little villages we have and keeping to the speed limit. makes motorway driving a dream
March 3, 2020 at 8:49 pm #108335Before I retired, I used to drive around 45,000 miles p.a, with probably 40-50% on Motorways where cruise is definitely a boon, and I have used it for many years .
I now have ACC on the Tiguan, and it is a different beast from normal Cruise Control, but really comes into it’s own on the motorway, however, it does take time to adjust , and to adapt to it, but it is really worth persevering with it!
It is a brilliant safety feature, rather than a convenience!
I use it on local roads and in traffic also, and I wish that it had been available to me when I was working!

DesAfter reading a few posts I have come to the conclusion that acc would just cause me to much stress. I always leave good room from mine to the car in front but tend to find that people just abuse it by pulling in and leaving no room.
if it leaves such a big gap I think the red mist will descend with acc.
ps find the finger speed setters on my 3008 by just upping and lowering my speed to keep a safe distance while on ordinary cc.
March 3, 2020 at 10:14 pm #108349
Douglas BrimsonI have it on my Tiguan but I only use it on motorways where it’s pretty decent when you get used to it. Anywhere else and it’s a bit of a pain. And it’s potentially lethal on roundabouts!

RaceCattThanks everybody for the replys. I think after reading through, I’m echoing @Des’s thoughts.

roxPersonally acc imo is a god send, it’s actually made driving easier for me especially in traffic with an auto (low speed follow) it’s not the same with a manual, but you do need to know how acc works but you can override it at anytime then resume it by pressing the button like cruise control. Then you can abuse it like i do… from 0mph to whatever away from the lights at the push of a button.. london and back on the motorway is no longer a problem messing about with standard cruise control, just don’t cut it after having acc.. it’s a must for me.. it’s a real big driving aid.
if some one cuts in 99% it’s ok the car will brake.. now i just aim at those cars so the radar picks them up 100% and once they move over again the car will resume the set speed. all i do is steer and change lane most of the time, my next car has lane keep assist and acc and pick that up next month
acc actually cause’s me less stress driving and alot less pain than any other car without acc but i get it’s not for everyone.. I think you need to be a confident driver to use it and trust it.. and i guess judge and feel what the car is doing and know it’s perimeters.

DBtruthI think acc is one of the best bits of usable tech on my car. I use it everyday.
With normal cruise you often need to keep to turning it off/on because the driver in front who’s not using cruise at all will struggle to keep at a constant speed so eventually you’ll catch them up which means you’ve either got to lower your cruising speed or overtake them.
acc gets rid of this problem. They slow down, you slow down. They speed up, you speed up.
Its not the end of the world if you’ve got to keep switching it on and off. You get used to it if you use it regularly but I think acc takes over that decision giving you one less thing to think about.
It can be irritating when another driver jumps into the space that your car has left but as long as you’re patient the car will do its thing and re adjust its position. The worst time is when someone pulls in front and then slows down. I usually just disengage cruise at that point and either wait until they’re gone or go past them and take up a new position further up the road.
My car came with it as standard. I would probably only pay extra for it if it was around £250 or less. Any more than that and I’d struggle to justify the cost. That’s assuming the car came with normal cruise as standard.
March 4, 2020 at 6:07 am #108374I agree DBtruth. I don’t have it in my X1 but agree it’s an amazing bit of tech.
Mine has std cruise and I use it every day. It’s a comfort with all of the speed camera’s waiting to grab our cash.
@Racecatt & @Des please don’t think it’s any more stressful than normal cruise control. It’s just a case of something different and imo takes no more to get used to than normal cruise. At the end of the day and don’t forget that you’re fully in control of the car and can disengage the system simply. I would ask a dealer to try it out at least as it may be some tech that you absolutely love.
? I will be remembered for nothing but had great fun doing it ?

Terry MartinI have it on my current car and due to my disability I have to use hand controls so it’s been a godsend and I wouldn’t purchase another car without it.

DogbossHi I have an X1 and it’s not fitted with acc. Mine’s fitted with some sort of collision avoidance thingy when it thinks your going to hit something a big red car illuminates in the dash between clocks if it gets really scared a buzzer sounds as well if I had acc would the brakes be coming on?
March 4, 2020 at 8:51 pm #108504As long as it has detected the other vehicle and you’re using the ACC, the VW brakes and accelerates to maintain the distance – ACC needs to be activated like normal cruise control – it doesn’t come on automatically that I know of – on the Tiguan I always keep the distance to car/lane detection display active so I know that the car in front of me has been detected. There have been several times it hasn’t noticed – seems to happen with dirty black cars (or maybe that was just today and it’s fresh in my head)
As long as the car is included in the graphic it means your vehicle has detected a vehicle in front of it but if there isn’t a car there then it thinks the road is clear. (Might be different to below, I didn’t take this pic, i stole it from another site)

DBtruth@colin could it be anything to do with the front sensors not being clear? I didn’t clean the snow off my bumper the other morning and had to drive to work without cruise as it said it was unavailable. I assumed it was because the sensors were obstructed. Not sure what it’s like where you live but here it’s been icy the past few mornings.
ive never had a problem with my car not picking up the car in front.
March 4, 2020 at 9:40 pm #108506I would never have a car without it (for motorway and long A roads, e.g. A1).
I find it extremely convenient, but the reason it’s a must for me is it’s safety feature. For example, if you are about to overtake a vehicle on a duel carriageway/motorway you will check your wing mirror and glance over your shoulder. If the car in front suddenly brakes, you will not see it, but your ACC will, stopping you.
I’m sure there is scenarios where ACC may be detrimental to safety, but think these will be far less frequent than the benefits it brings.
March 4, 2020 at 9:45 pm #108507The only scenario where it would be an issue at roundabouts is if you don’t want to slow down for a roundabout, i.e. to slow down a car using ACC you put your foot on the break.
If you didn’t have ACC and didn’t slow down for roundabouts, it would be just as lethal.

michellepenaMaybe because of the year of that model? Since my uncle’s car does not have ACC.
March 10, 2020 at 11:55 am #108930Have it for the first time on the current car. Tried it a couple times but bottom line is it doesn’t scan and plan as far ahead as I do! Like got etc CC though it is useful in those long 50mph sections and AVG speed sections.
I do however, think that CC and ACC contribute to lane hogging. People set it and sit in the outside lane, quite often totally unaware or if they are don’t care anyway, of the queue behind them!

roxbandit they can change lane all they gotta do is steer and of course indicate. maybe it’s the lane keep assist that makes them stay in the same lane when they could move over..as they won’t indicate.
I must say acc works alot better than just cc because it brakes, so i don’t have too.. then it speeds back up to the set speed, all i do i steer and take over if needed and it always keeps a safe distance from the car in front if the radar is locked on and condtions are good.. it’s a driving aid and not flawless and deffo depends on the car as to how effective it is..
Like when I’m using it around town or in traffic, it makes driving alot less stressful on my mind and body as it does so much so i don’t have to.. But i must admit when looking for my latest car alot of dealers were giving me the looks about acc and how much i use it..
I would’nt be without it. I’ve drove more miles using acc than i’ve done in any car on the scheme, before it was a problem and i was gonna have to get adaptions but now the joy is back so to speak..
I can drive to visit my mum in london 140+ miles away and most of that i just steer, unless there a red light and no car i gotta brake. but then i press the button to resume and off the car goes from 0mph 30 mph or 70 mph if needed. Plus i drove to amsterdam with the missus and we all off to euro dissney next month and that wouldn’t be possible for me without acc.. I the only one who drives so all on me as well.
