The best mpg car I’ve ever owned was an early escort mk 3 turbo diesel, that thing must have done 80 mpg. It used to amaze me how little we filled it up. It was bloody dangerous though as it didn’t move until the turbo spooled up, so right turns in traffic were exciting as you pulled out and nothing happened and then whoosh….it went like a rocket. Blame emissions for some of the shocking mpg’s on some modern cars.

yes I know that its why I quoted the figures of  20 and 25 to refer to, I had the 2.0D in 1 series and 3 series and could quite easily managed 60 – 65mpg down the m2, talking of mpg though best car by far was merc b class 2013, that had  the 1.5 or 1.6 D, that had claimed 62mpg, we used to get on tank to tank mpg figure 70 mpg on a regular. and lets just say I stick to the mileage correction figures on motorway (so 74).. in the tiguan r line I do 78 mph, as the car is out by 4mph on speedo, gps on both phone and dashcam confirm this. I got told a long time ago by a police officer if conditions permit, no police office will pull you over doing 79mph on motorway, but tbh I just stick to the advised mpg correction figures which are 4mph.. currently tiguan only get avg of 42, but at start when i picked it up it was 32 :O, its not broken in yet. Its a standard I have experienced across the range of diesels, they are upto 30% down on claimed mpg until worn in. On another note the worst mpg was BMW’s 1.5 3 pot, it was so bad when 32mpg was best in 3 series (there 2.0 4 pot petrol gets better mpg lol ) so much for eco ehh?  and when my dad was ill, I was spending more than i could afford with a 150 mile round trip to see him 3 to 4 times a week, so back to diesel i went.
