Ditto: filter out what you think is acceptable for you: budget, size, engine types, etc.
Then I normally go directly to the dealer’s website and look for available stocks. In 99.99% it is available, unless the dealer doesn’t want to sell you (in my case it was Marshall Oxford), so just call another dealer (Marshall Reading sold it to me on a spot).
Note many people will tell you there’s two visits rule. And it is correct in general: you have to be physically present at the dealership to place an order. But in reality, as we live in 21 century, many do not insist on this rule: both Mazda and Skoda I purchased without leaving my house, using digital signature. Only went to collect the car.
