It’s fine saying you can go elsewhere if the dealership insists on having a deposit. Way down here in Cornwall, if I wanted Hyundai, KIA, MG, Peugeot, Nissan Vauxhall, Cupra, Renault, Skoda, VW or Volvo, you’ve the grand choice of one dealership within 90 miles. That means it’s take it or spend a fortune in travel.
I was told it was a £1,000 deposit, no question, no choice. It’s fully understandable when they’re ordering £55k worth of car when they’re not selling big numbers of that particular spec.
