@clappedout I think you made a wise choice.
Whether or not a PHEV works for people very much depends on how they use a car. If almost all mileage is within the EV only range and charging at home after each use isn’t an issue, then they can be a great compromise for those who don’t want the range limitations of a full EV. My problem is that I do regular longer journeys and, as you rightly say, the substantial extra weight of a PHEV then becomes a problem, as they aren’t terribly fuel efficient when working as petrol or even self charging hybrids. That being said, other makes may well be better than Hyundai in that respect.
I envy your brothers 340d. BMW six cylinder diesel engines are just superb. The best car I’ve ever owned or driven was my final company car, a BMW 530d. I quite fancy getting a BMW X5 30d or 40d but with my mileage having dropped so much I’m not sure that a diesel would be a sensible way to go now, as diesels can be problematic unless used for regular longer journeys (longer and more frequent than the ones I do)
I agree about the forthcoming changes, but I still maintain that the government will have to eventually back track on the EV targets. New car sales are currently at very low levels as private consumers don’t want EVs and are unsettled by the forthcoming changes. Starmers statement the other day that all new policies, including green ones, must support growth could be their get out of jail card, as the ZEV mandates are doing the polar opposite.
