I appreciate that range can be a big issue with BEVs, especially as many fall woefully short of their claimed ranges, and although I have one on my shortlist it remains my biggest concern. I know a few people with BEVs, but they all have ICE cars as well, which they tend to use for longer journeys, but as I’m the only driver in our household now I don’t want to runs 2 cars.
It’s not a great idea to only have air conditioning on intermittently in order to conserve range though. Air conditioning (or climate control systems) should ideally be left on permanently, all year round, even in winter. Some people mistakenly think that these systems are just to cool down warm cars, but they dehumidify the air in the cabin, which reduces driver fatigue. Also, when these systems are turned off the seals dry out and perish, causing the refrigerant to leak out, rendering the system ineffective. I keep mine on 365 days a year and just regulate the cabin temperature to suit the time of year. If we get a BEV I wouldn’t be happy having to turn it off in order to eek more mileage out of a charge.
