I think the 2 series coupe really should be on the scheme. Cars with 2 or 3 doors are massively more accessible for those who want to lift a wheelchair into the car on their own (i.e. be independent!). The wide door makes such a difference.

There are very very few cars with 2 or 3 doors being manufactured these days. Yes, the MINI is one and is on the scheme, but once me and my wheelchair are inside there is hardly room for anything else (certainly not another person). I just can’t get myself and my wheelchair into a 5-door car like the Golf, 1-series,  Corolla etc on my own. I can get myself and my chair into something like a Peugeot 408 on my own, but it’s a struggle. SUVs like the 2008, Tiguan etc are even more difficult (the height makes it so hard for a paraplegic to re-assemble the wheelchair when getting out). Who buys cars that are going to be a struggle? I just know I’d not bother going out if I had a car that was such a struggle. Hardly the freedom and independence that Motability is supposed to promote.

If Motability is serious about cars that suit people with all kinds of disabilities, they need to include 2-door and 3-door cars, even if the choice of such cars is extremely limited. I’ve been on the scheme for 29 years and always had 2-door or 3-door cars; for a very good reason. I have the old 2-series coupe (coming to the end of my 5-year Motability term) and getting in and out is so easy. Plus my wheelchair can fit in the boot, so I can take my family with me in the car. Not too much to ask in my opinion.
