With a General Election due within the next 18 months (and, most likely next Autumn) I think that the government will be far more concerned about what the electorate think about this, rather than the car manufacturers.

Public opinion seems to be firmly behind the dates being relaxed, which makes Labours opposition to it rather strange. The 2030 date has been unachievable ever since Covid and it will be completely impossible to reinstate it in 12-18 months time, so they are going to look a bit daft. Labour did a similar knee jerk reaction within 24 hours of Jeremy Hunt announcing the pension changes. They said they would reverse the changes if elected, yet experts in the pensions industry say that it will be extremely difficult to do that, as it’s so complex and it is taking a year for HMRC to make the legislative changes. Labour have also recently said that there won’t be any wealth taxes, yet reversing the pensions changes would be just that. I can’t wait to see what makes it into their manifesto. Just objecting to everything is pointless. It has to be backed up with alternative policies and they are definitely ‘policy lite’ at present.
