Clearly we dont know what happened and hopefully an investigation will find out (although if the vehicle has been scrapped already thats going to be difficult).
For me this is a good reminder to everyone that using/relying on things like adaptive cruise control and lane departure when driving around town etc are risky. I have a friend who used to use these all the time and it was scary being with him in the car because he totally left the car to keep him in lane and apart from the car in front.
I need to finish by saying again I am absolutely NOT saying the above is what happened (we dont know), but its a good reminder of how to use these systems well.
Could be worth visiting the road again to see whether there are any significant repair lines which might fool the cars system.
