The way to minimise this problem is to let the dealership know that you understand how it all works by asking very probing questions before you order. I will always say “where are you with build slot allocations for this model? If I ordered today, when would you be able to place a firm build order with the manufacturer?”. I also make it clear that I would expect to have a manufacturer order tracking number (which is NOT the Motability order number) within days. When a dealer realises that you understand how it all works, the BS usually subsides and you start to get a more honest answer as to when you can expect your car. If they admit that they can’t place the order for a few months, phone a few other dealers. You might find that another can order immediately.

Well, my dealer experience was not that great.
I selected a car and trotted off to the dealer.
They were doing a “wonderful deal” and giving you ‘over’ £50 back, this was supposed to be a dealer initiative. Whilst the salesman went off to enquire about delivery times, I did some math. £699 was the AP on my selected car, £750 was my new vehicle payments, which left £51. Hmmm, on asking again, they informed me they claim the full £750 payment and on collection give me £51 back. Right oh!
BUT great news, they did have some floating around the network ready in 4 to 6 weeks. Hang on, there is supposed to be a year long wait for this model. On asking to double check, I was told, yep you’re right.
So, taking your advice, I enquired about build slots, I was given a curious glance then told the car would be ordered from the manufacturer in around 3 to 4 weeks time; however, I would not be given any order number or details, but the dealer would update me monthly.
So I failed in every way to be ‘informed’. I had a dealer who was not that well informed about Motability although he was accredited and gave me misleading info until I challenged it. I left the dealership with an order in place. Whether I see that come to fruition within a year is questionable.
As I’m prepared to travel, is it worth approaching other dealers, and if I find one who is knowledgeable and forthright, can I start the process again?. I’ve nothing to lose as they’ve not even placed a factory order to date.
