Probably the badge. ICE vehicles are still subject to badge snobbery, where BEVs seem less prone to such separation. For example the EV6 GT, iX3 and E-tron are all similar prices and yet if you ask around EV forums and groups the EV6 is held in higher esteem. It seems the quality of the car matters more than the imagery and assumed esteem a badge provides.
Some people, especially when the scheme is brought into consideration, need a larger vehicle and will only have the funds to meet size requirements without being able to step up in spec.
As you say, each to their own, we all make decisions based on our personal requirements, it’s just that some include external influence in those requirements.
