Reply To: DVLA Driving Adaptations Codes help

Thanks for the (very helpful) replies so far.

My main reason for asking was, I want to ‘cover myself’ for being able to use Hand Controls (push/pull brake/accelerator, auto transmission so no need for clutch controls) in the event I should ever need to use a ‘hire car’, e.g. Motability vehicle out of action.

I did speak to my local adaptions specialist about it, but he warned me that if I were to add the code(s) for ‘Hand Controls’ (hence my original question) to my licence, DVLA might insist that I ONLY use Hand Controls from now on!!! This would be a backwards step as I currently only use a Left Foot Accelerator, but that is a far more complicated adaption to fit – e.g. to a hire car – than a simple Push/Pull Brake/Accelerator.

Going by the earlier replies, Code 32 would appear to cover ‘Push/Pull Brake/Accelerator systems’, but then what’s the difference between ‘Combined’ & ‘Modified’ (Codes 20 & 25) systems???

What a minefield!!! Having been disabled all my life and a driver for over 40 years, I wonder if writing to the DVLA will actually result in ‘opening a can of worms’?!
