Sorry Kezo and Rene I’ve not quite figured out how to quote tweet yet. I understand where Rene is coming from in the essence that 1 journey had averaged 99.9 and 1 journey 17mpg so that would average out somewhere in between over time, having never owned a petrol vehicle in my 20 years of driving if we exclude the battery and electric charging etc would 17mpg be normal for a 2/3 mile journey? I think the figure I’d be more inclined to look at would be getting 120 miles from £30 of petrol that included 70 miles of a big drive home, again maybe my expectations coming from a diesel and this being petrol are maybe slightly out.

17MPG is a bit on the low end for a 2-3 mile journey, but not impossible to achieve in a petrol ICE. I’d say that with a cold engine, over 2 miles, our 1.5 Ateca manages 20mpg (which then climbs from there of course).

Your diesel will definitely have been more economical than the QQ ePower in terms of pure “liquid burned” – of course diesel is more expensive, so in terms of money it’s hard to say (and it also depends on what kinda diesel you drove).

Very short journeys like that 2-3 mile journey are a really bad indicator for anything, since there’s lots of variables playing into it (cold engine etc).

My guess is that your QQ simply ran on full load on the second drive (in this case the ePower system is a drawback) to charge the battery faster than you could deplete it. I’d be interested to see where you land in terms of economy when you start with an empty battery, but drive around 15 miles – that’d be more representative, i think. As for what happened now, as i said: you’re averaging over 50mpg at the moment with those two drives, so far i personally can’t see a problem.

No Tuscon ICE. The HEV Sportage has remote  park – back and forth only off the battery. but Idon’t believe it has remote heat or whatever they call it. You also have to be within aclose proximity to the car.

Hm, must’ve misunderstood something there (was late at night/morning). And yeah of course you have a Tucson, not quite sure why i mistook the Sportage for a Tucson. Probably more tired than i thought.

In regards to insurance, yes, cheap aftermarket systems can create a problem if your car’s stolen while remotely started. That doesn’t apply for quality systems (or factory fitted options) – there’s no way for an Insurance not to pay while using a factory fitted option, obviously.

On the other hand, £20 systems that allow you to remote start while the car is in gear, sure. Quality systems though aren’t an issue with insurance. They might argue that it’s an issue, but they have no leg to stand on.

Remote heaters (Webasto for example) can be retrofitted, doesn’t need to be a diesel either. It’s all a bit much though, in the end i probably would just end up with what i’m doing in winter – get outside, start the engine, lock the car and get back inside, drink the rest of my coffee and sorted (my wife can’t get into a cold car). It’s probably the better idea in the ePower anyway since that would also charge a bit of battery prior to driving off. It’s not that big of a deal, if we’re being objective.
