As 11Kw onboard chargers become more common, here in the UK we are are going to be bottlenecked with a 7.4Kw wall charger. To release the potential faster charging of an 11Kw onboard charger a 3 phase domestic (or rotary phase converter (forget I said that)) is needed.
I know of only a few DNO’s, future proofing, fitting a 3 phase supply at the time of carrying out minor works if needed for a home charger to be fitted and even then its limited to who gets it.
All new homes should be mandatory fitted with 3phase supply’s and existing homes upgraded to 3 phase at the point of the homeowner switching to an EV. This work by the DNO as is free and should include 3 phase at the time of carrying out necessary minor works.
Many of our friends in continental Europe have 3 phase to all buildings at the main fuse panel and distribute single phase load accross the phases. This will allow the end user to have a 11Kw or 22Kw home charger (11Kw is most common in mainland Europe)
When will the UK come up to standard or will be left in the dark ages!
