“Whats good for one may not be for another”

Indeed, particularly on the subject of extending leases.

With my Veterans Welfare hat on, when I speak with War Pensioners who use the Motability scheme, of those whose cars remain suitable, most are in favour of extending their leases to the max. Usually based on:

    1. They are not that bothered about a new car every 3 years.

    2. The weekly rebate of currently £7.50 per week (which should increase in April 2023) they receive during the full lease extension period.

Many save the weekly rebate towards their next vehicle, which currently over two years is £780 towards the next vehicle’s AP – even more if their next vehicle takes a further 12 months or so to arrive! Hence leaving more beer vouchers in their pocket!

A somewhat altruistic third point I once heard from an injured Parachute Regt RSM veteran of a slightly older generation, was that it also saved the M.O.D. money by only needing the auto-transmission grant and the grant for his hoist once every 5 years instead of every 3 years. Thus, the MOD had more funds available for the ‘front line’. Whether in practice the saving does get to the ‘front line’ is anyone’s guess, but I did rather admire his somewhat altruistic thought train!
