when i ordered the xc40 in oct they classed it as large iv still got my a 65plate xc40 so what size would that be classes as extra large

Ok, so I fully accept I am being pedantic, but at just 4.4m the XC40 is Volvos small SUV, the XC60 is medium and the XC90 large
Not pedantic at all. Personally I would say small is 4.1m to 4.4m Medium 4.4m to 4.6m and large 4.7m and over. Obviously there is going to be slight overlap I.E the Ateca would fall into medium although it is just below 4.4m.
I also think a vehicles wheel base determines what class it would fall into and whether someone or indeed manufacturers class categories as compact, small, medium and large or simply small, medium and large.
Volvo could therefore say the XC20 is compact, XC40 small XC60 medium and XC90 large. /On the other hand PSA group could say the 2008 is small the 3008 medium and the 5008 large. Seat Arona small, Ateca medium and Terraco large etc etc.
Although like many of us believe MB is way of with its interpretation.
