I’d be surprised if we ever get anything as bold as Farscape again from any of the majors (8/10 – excellent first 3 seasons but, imho, it went off a bit after Zhaan departed).  Ditto Babylon 5 (10/10.  I liked the savagely curtailed Crusade, too).  Far too abstract and abstruse (guess who got a Word of the Day calendar for Christmas . . . ).  Serious Sci-Fi with long term, over-arching plots apparently doesn’t appeal to the ‘core demographic’ – young adult viewers.*  Try getting a long run series without a couple of good-looking young men/women in main roles.  Remember how long they managed to drag out The X Files far beyond it’s sell by date.  Could have wrapped it up in 5 seasons, but no . . .

(*Which is, of course, a ridiculous approach because other than children (where ‘pester power’ is expected to get their parents to cough up the cash), young adults are the ones with the least money to waste on all the products pushed in the adverts during these shows.)

The Expanse (10/10) has just gone the same way – 5 books over 5 seasons, then book 6  compressed into 6 episodes to the point where it was almost impossible to work out what was going on.  At least they didn’t resort to a Game of Thrones ending, and there’s room for it to be picked up in the future for the last three books in the story – either series or films, as they did (circling back to the beginning) with Farscape.
