Motability boss steps down after ‘obscene’ bonuses revealed

TAXPAYER-FUNDED Motability charity boss Mike Betts will step down after it was revealed yesterday that he will receive a £2.2 million bonus on top of his already generous salary.

The Motability Operations chief executive will leave his position by May 2020 following a report on the charity by public spending watchdog the National Audit Office (NAO).

He also came under fire earlier this year for his annual £1.7m pay package.

The firm operates the Motability scheme – which provides wheelchairs, cars and scooters to disabled people – currently helping over 600,000 people through their enhanced mobility disability benefits, such as the Personal Independence Payment.

The NAO report found that the Motability scheme had made more profit than intended, and that its customers had been charged £390 million more than was required to cover lease costs.

Labour’s shadow minister for disabled people Marsha de Cordova said: “It is shocking that the wealthy few continue to profit at the expense of many disabled people in need of support.

“It is disgraceful that executive directors received millions in bonuses, particularly given that the scheme has been found to overcharge hundreds of thousands of disabled people for vital mobility support.

“We urgently need accountability and transparency for this scheme, which should put disabled people’s interests at its heart.”

Mr Betts’s level of pay was described as “obscene” by MP Frank Field, who chairs Parliament’s work and pensions committee.

A company spokesman said they were making changes in the light of the report but claimed the finding that customers are being overcharged “runs quite contrary” to prices that are lower than the market rate.
