This problem was predicted by many of us some time ago when the Blue Badge scheme was widened to include mental health issues and it is going to get a lot worse. More and more people are now successfully applying for Blue Badges, yet the number of spaces isn’t being increased. It’s therefore a simple case of supply and demand.
As my wife is a full time wheelchair user, we need to use spaces with hatched areas to the side of the car so that she can open the door fully and I can bring the wheelchair alongside. Even some accessible spaces aren’t suitable for this as not all have hatched areas between them. At a shopping centre some 20 minutes from us we once waited so long to try to secure a suitable space that we gave up and drove home again. Sadly, this is going to become more commonplace. The multi storey car park at our nearest hospital has a whole floor of disabled parking and yet it’s nearly always full.
