Motability Operations (who we deal with and who lease us the cars) are indeed a commercial profit making business with four big financial institutions as major stakeholders. All staff (not just directors) have very generous pay and benefits packages, including defined benefit pensions and private health insurance – all paid for through disabled customers sacrificed benefits. Motability (the charity) is, by comparison, a very small setup. That’s why I get frustrated when people talk about Motability as being a ‘charity’ (as, in reality, it isn’t) and adopt the ‘we should be very grateful’ attitude. If it was truly a full blown charity operation with the sole objective of keeping disabled people mobile (and with salaries and benefits that were more in line with the third sector) then AP’s would be significantly lower.
