You were told Petrol is better for short journeys not because they are more frugal on fuel, but because diesels are totally unsuitable for short journeys, with the particle filters and exhaust gas recirculation valves fitted nowadays to comply with the latest emissions.
Before you know it, a diesel Q3 would be going into limp mode and requiring a trip back to the dealer.
32 on your 2 hour run does sound a bit low, but will depend on temperature, wind, traffic as well as your driving style. Did you reset the fuel computer before the 2 hour journey?
