JSH – that’s a strange attitude. Personally, I would welcome greater choice of all car types for all disabled drivers. Motability don’t need to reduce choice of one type of car in order to do that. Yes, there should be more choice of lower cars but there should be more choice of SUV’s as well. There are less than half the number of cars available on the scheme now than was the case 10 years ago, so I would like to see a massive increase in choice of all car types.
As a point of interest, my wife is a full time wheelchair user and she prefers SUV’s. The problem that we have is that the vast majority of SUV’s currently available through Motability are small ones, with small boots. They look ‘big’ because they are tall but, in reality, most are just taller versions of cars like the Golf and Focus and aren’t much bigger inside. Her wheelchair pretty much fills the boot of them (in some it won’t even fit) meaning that if we want to carry luggage as well we have to put the rear seats down, restricting the car to a two seater. We would very much like to see a much greater choice of larger SUV’s on the scheme and would be prepared to pay higher AP’s for them. I also hope that the choice improves for the types of car that suit your particular needs.
