Amongst other cars on my list I have a skoda and a seat, which come in 2.0 diesel or 1.5 petrol. Now I know the diesels are pretty good, reasonably quiet for a diesel and good mpg but it is many years since I drove a petrol car so just wondered what peoples experience of that 1.5 peteol engine were I.e refinement, mpg, torque. Cheers

Hi Shaun. Personally, I wouldn’t say that the VW diesels are quiet as diesels go. We’ve had 4 of them (3 x Tiguan 2.0TDi 150 and our current 190PS) and I’ve driven several other VW diesel powered cars, and by comparison to similar BMW diesels that I have had (and run at the same time as the VW’s) they don’t compare well. BMW Diesel engines are much more refined, quieter, feel far more powerful and deliver better MPG. I have no experience of the 1.5 petrol engines but I’ve seen good reviews and owners of them on here seem pleased with them. Obviously they don’t have the torque of a diesel but I watched a good video review (1.5 Tiguan) where the tester said the power was more than sufficient and only felt strained during hard acceleration. There is a possibility that the 2.0TSi 190PS 4WD Tiguan may join the scheme when that engine arrives in the UK (AP’s were set for the Elegance and R-Line variants in Q4) but at the rate that cars are disappearing from Motability these days I’m not holding my breath.
