Revolver! E Rigby? Well, now you’ve started something. I listen to Revolver and Sgt Pepper more than any other LPs. Rigby is certainly one of the best popular songs ever written. Barbara Dickson does a stunning version on “Nothing’s Gonna Change My World” album. It will make you cry! Can’t say whether it is the best song because my list ain’t finished.
In a rash moment I decided that it might be fun to come up with a list of the top ten popular songs ever written. Well, I got a short list of over 50 now. Rigby is definitely in top five with Bridge Over Troubled Water, Blackbird. I don’t restrict myself to stuff from my youth. Gone back to the 30s/40s. Cole Porter and Gershwin and Hoagy Carmichael did some brilliant work. At moment the latter’s Stardust is at number one. McCartney is the problem in finishing the list – I keep discovering obscure lyric pieces tucked away in different places. I Will, Rocky Racoon, Honey Pie and more.
