Most autos these days are DCT. In other words a manual gear box with two clutches where the gears are changed automatically by electrical servos. There is none of the drag and friction of previous torque converter auto boxes. Hence fuel economy is as good as a manual and acceleration is often better in reality because the box can change gear faster than a human.
