As I understand it the problem will always be that you don’t live at home and it’s your mothers car, as soon as you said you use your mums car to go to uni alarm bells would be ringing.
It does sound harsh but they are obliged to check your mums car is being used to benefit her and not you.
I would imagine your MP would be sympathetic but can’t see what they could do to change your current situation.
