Much chatter on the forum about Ap’s and extras.
I think all vehicles on the scheme should come with some extras as a default standard.
1. Front and rear sensors are essential. Not necessary auto parking though.
Please Add what you think a motability vehicle should come fitted with as standard that would be of benefit to most drivers on the scheme.
Cheers
Joss

Douglas BrimsonI think we all have extras which we consider essential but if we sat back and actually thought about it honestly, 90% wouldn’t be. The vast majority are conveniences designed purely to make life easier.
If you can’t drive a car without parking sensors for example, should you actually be driving at all?

PhiljbCruise control and electric handbrake are useful, plus electric windows.
But for me a supportive drivers seat with lots of adjustment.
Plus I do like the Auto main beam on our car, now I’ve used it quite a bit I’d miss it.

LittledaveMany disabled people have difficulty in turning their bodies to be able to reverse safely. For them, sensors are essential. I’m sure that when electric starters replaced starting handles, people would say, if you can’t start a car, should you be driving?

My previous car had keyless back in 2014 then after a couple of years the rumours started spreading about how easy they are to nick.
I might have spent extra money on this very useful add-on but those stories of easy theft became something I just could not let go by thinking it was just another Daily Mail scar story so glad I have given it a miss with my current car and know the car will be in the same place where I left it when I return to the car.
Took awhile to get use to having to take the key out of my pocket with only one useful hand to hand though but after 9 months got use to doing that again now. ✔

BaljitRadar adaptive cruise control for me as it makes the car almost self driving can’t drive around town or motorway without it
July 18, 2019 at 1:00 am #82858As a wheelchair user I would like the option of a remote tailgate.just ordered a mondeo estate and could not have the remote boot as it’s tied in with led light option which would cost £1200.so now again have to use a boot strap.motability are offering remote for free which works horn, indicator for free so I can’t understand why this can’t be classed as an adaptation at a reduced cost.

Not a true quote to be honest, since march last year, most keys from all major manufacture including non keyless shut off after 10 minutes of no movement.
July 18, 2019 at 8:09 am #82873i do find it slightly amusing when some of the must haves are stuff that has only been available in the last couple of years. what did people do before heated seats, parking sensors, radar cruise control etc. are you telling me they didnt drive. i doubt it very much so they are “would ne nice” rather than must have.
i do agree that manufacturers ought to allow a pick and mix of optional extras for the disabled rather than packs with stuff thats not needed.

PhiljbThe more helpful tech the easier it is to drive, years ago cars didn’t have indicators or motorised wipers, or lots of things we now expect as standard as things move on.
When I passed my test very few cars had electric windows or aircon. Now pretty much every car has these as standard.
It won’t be long before we could have driverless cars?
What does it matter that we used to drive older less equipped cars when we were younger? I wasn’t disabled back then either.
The question was what extras would we like as standard, when you get used to something you like, why not want it again on your next car?
July 18, 2019 at 8:49 am #82876We are ignoring the elephant in the room, there is no “typical” or “standard” disabled person. There are certainly “groups” of disabilities that “maybe” would allow a disability pack to be introduced but maybe a better way would be to offer packs, as standard. Packs where the contents can be varied around the edges.
obviously cost will come into it so there would need to be a limit to “free” packs but grants could be set up for those who can’t afford stuff not included in the pack.
For instance if you needed front and rear cameras and electric lights and wipers then that could be a pack.
The cost of the pack would probably need to be capped at maybe £1000 maybe £1500, but they certainly couldn’t be open ended.
Being able to tinker with the pack would mean you don’t get stuff you don’t need and would hopefully keep the cost down.

Leon GAdaptive cruise control is a must for me , as an amputee of 50 years my remaining ankle is becoming weaker and with ACC I can drive on motorway using steering wheel control by reducing/increasing speeds without using brake pedal and putting no pressure on my ankle. Salesman at VW told me to try it in town and so I did and its brilliant , follows the speed of the car in front -stops on its own-engine switches off and then starts when car in front moves-all I do is touch accelerator and off it goes following vehicle in front. Iv’e had this on my Golfs for 6 years and ordered Tig because it has ACC.
I understand that the ford focus active x has it and takes it a stage further and starts itself and moves off without touching the accelerator. to disengage just touch brake or cancel on steering wheel.
Anything that helps my disability is fine with me
July 18, 2019 at 11:51 am #82892Agree with parking sensors being offered as standard, modern cars are getting bigger and safety requirements means viability can be restricted even before limited movement / ability to look over shoulder is taken into account.
Same sort of thing with electric handbrakes, in general controls have become lighter but the mechanical handbrake hasn’t really changed much over the years and requires a degree of physical effort to use, certainly more than the electric versions anyway.
Some manufacturers offer parking sensors as a “free extra” but quite a few have them fitted anyway and more and more models in general are getting EPBs, a good example of features once limited to higher end models filtering down and helping everyone.
The having to buy a pack of mostly unwanted options to gain one you do is a bit of a problems across the whole car industry, lots of complaining about it on many different car forums so not just us lot unhappy about it. To be honest not really sure what the answer is, trying to get manufacturers to create new “disabled” packs could be tricky as its means changing the production process and trying to offer a one size fits all Motability spec could reduce the range of trim levels offered.
July 18, 2019 at 2:51 pm #82903I need folding mirrors as getting around the car is difficult but to get them on the mini its £1600 as you have to have a pack thats insane. Also park assist is great due to my neck problem.
July 18, 2019 at 3:26 pm #82905I couldn’t live without electric folding mirrors ACC and ALD
July 18, 2019 at 3:34 pm #82906Daveblue, that’s a silly amount of money, even more so with a “better brand” like Mini as you’d expect it to be standard across the range – seem like a great way to artificially increase the price, I cant imagine many private buyers not speccing it as come re-sale time its bounds to have a knock on effect.
July 18, 2019 at 3:45 pm #82907
BigBI think “packs” are the biggest rip off manufacturers have invented. Like Daveblue I was looking at a Mini, I was adding the JCW pack and the only two other things I wanted were privacy glass and a reversing camera which were shown as individually priced items circa £300. When I spoke to the salesman I was informed they were only available in the Tech pack and Comfort pack circa £3000. When I pointed out the JCW pack came with upgraded seats as did the Comfort pack although different design and asked why I needed to pay for two sets of seats he couldn’t give me an answer but suggested I pick which set I wanted fitted and keep the other set as spares. Needless to say I walked out.

Hi wibbuk
I have to use a remote control for horn, indicators and main beam dip but have never seen one that’s free but that said I’ve just check the adaption price list for Q3 for this year and there is one listed at £0.00 by a company called ‘guidosimplex’ but the link is returning a “404 page not found” for me but would very much be interested in a freebie in future if indeed it is free.
The least I’ve ever paid for a remote control is £300 + and the most £700 as the price varies on almost every quarter even though its the same manufacture and model every time.
I’ve noticed that Q3 also has a remote control by Technobility and is very much the same as the Logdesons ones I’ve always used and its priced 60% cheaper than the Lodgesons so will some time in future pay a visit to a roadshow to have a look at that bargain should it still be there in two years time.
July 19, 2019 at 12:49 am #82943Chrisk when I ordered my last car I ordered it with cowl hand controls and the adaptation firm added logsons remote for free for the indicators switch and horn.if you had 5-7 options the price went up.for me I just needed an indicator switch on my hand control so I had the option of the remote removed.when talking with Motability they it’s free so why not keep it.i just wanted what I was used too.
July 19, 2019 at 7:16 am #82949Hi wibbuk
That’s interesting about your installer giving away Lodgesons controls but I’ve never been that lucky. ?
I use the Lodgeson 7 way as I don’t like to have too much of a complicated arrangement of buttons on the steering wheel. I get a fist waved at me now where I’ve accidental hit the horn when I meant to flash the lights. This is also why I have to pay extra AP by going up the trim range to get things like auto lights and wipers.
Just out of interest when I bought (long story) my previous Motability car they gave me a breakdown of what was included in the sell and they listed the full price of the 7 way Lodgeson control and that price was £1,200.
Just think that over half the cost of a 42” panel TV could be for the remote control. ?
