We chose a Hyundai Ioniq 6 as our next motability car and was wondering what a decent efficiency should be. I had driven about 80 miles, mostly local driving with a bit of motorway thrown in and was getting 4.3 miles per kwh. I’ve now been on a longer journey, about 80 miles, and I’m getting 4.1 mpkwh. Looking on line this appears decent and conditions just now are perfect it will be interesting to see the drop off in the winter.
So EV drivers what are you getting and what did you expect?

I think anything above 4mpkwh is good. I tend to average around 4.4mpkwh, but that’s partially due to manually controlling when i use the petrol engine, so the electric motor always does the juicy, creamy bits that are good for economy.
Below 3.3mpkwh i’d start to get a bit miffed for longer journeys, regardless of weather.
Your dropoff won’t be as bad (still VERY noticeable, mind) as many other EVs due to the standard equipment heatpump.

If I stick to 60-65 on the M’way I can generally maintain a 4 avg but 70-75 it drops to the low 3s. (Citroen eC4)
August 16, 2025 at 11:06 am #3113783.5 to 3.7 usually on the Enyaq 85X, most of my journeys are 3 – 9 miles each way and i don’t pre-warm the battery or really make any effort to drive economically. I have had 4.1 on a trip to Whitby (about 150 round trip).
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!
August 16, 2025 at 11:08 am #311379E3008 here. Currently getting about 4.1. I do a lot of short half mile runs though. Winter is atrocious. Although the WLTP for the car (73kwh battery) is 326 miles, during winter, I was on target to get just 150ish miles from a full battery. Over the lifetime of the car (got it last August) of one year and 10k miles, I’m averaging 3.1 m/kwh.
August 16, 2025 at 11:45 am #311382@Brydo I’ve had mines 13 months and anything around 4 or just over is good, it’ll maybe be closer to 3.5 or just under over winter.
We done over 2k going Glasgow to Cornwall, Swansea, up through Wales to Llandudno and home over 10 days and averaged 4 just touring, I also get about 4 as a norm just doing the daily stuff.
I’ve just got back at 1am from 868 miles to Farnborough and got 3.7 but I was myself so speeds were a bit higher than if wife had been there… maybe about 10% over limit keeping up with traffic 😉😉🤫😂
August 16, 2025 at 2:01 pm #311384That’s pretty encouraging that 4 seems to be the norm. I can’t believe how easy it is to go fast in this car, as I said on another thread I’m a very slow driver, normally, but was way over 70 without noticing it even with the bings and bongs. Worryingly I’ve started to ignore them.
@Rene the heat pump seems to help as well had the air con on for the entire journey.@ Rhodgie those figures are pretty good, I’ll be happy if that’s what I get.

August 16, 2025 at 2:49 pm #311390Over the 3 years I had my Kona 64 I averaged 4.4 – I did less than 10k miles – most local but a few long upto 250mls
My current Elroq 85 is currently averaging 4.0 – the hot weather effected the range more than I expected.
I have made one long journey 250mls, which I am repeating tomorrow – will update after the first 1000 miles.August 16, 2025 at 2:58 pm #311391Does the reduced range when putting the air con on put you off using it? I believe the 12 volt battery in the Ioniq 6 delivers the heat to the steering wheel and the seats so doesn’t really affect the range. Looking on some Hyundai websites many just use the heated seats and steering wheel in the winter to help their range. My good lady wouldn’t have any of that, if the air cons on it’s on full she only seems to understand on and off and nothing in between 😂

Anything i post over three lines long please assume it is an article lol.August 16, 2025 at 4:05 pm #311392The Kona Ultimate that I had – it had heated and cooled seats – heated steering wheel and sunroof – I often used the seats for warmth and cooling – very efficient – just had fan on very low to move the air – think I opened the sunroof less than 5 times.
I do miss the cooled seats as the Elroq only has heated.
But all of this is relative to your mileage – the 250mls I am doing tomorrow will be no range anxiety as The Elroq is good for 300 miles + with music a/c and 70 mph on motorway.August 16, 2025 at 4:10 pm #311393@Brydo the range maybe reduces +- 10 miles for me. The temperature is normally set between 19/22 and I let the car do the rest in between times. In my previous Kona ev I did all the no heating/ventilation road but when I changed to the Ioniq I just thought I’ve paid out on the AP so why not just enjoy the car? Being comfortable far outweighs trying to eek out a few extra Kw, it’s not as if it doesn’t have an adequate range.
August 16, 2025 at 6:27 pm #311400I just use the A/C as I need it, with this car the range is so good it isn’t worth scrimping to gain an extra 10 miles. I also use the heated and cooled seats for extra comfort and I’ll open the sunroof or window for some fresh air if I’m going slowly as too noisy at speed

Just back from 250 mile round trip.
Car averaged 3.8 – ACC on – a/c on set to 19c – music on.
Mostly down the M4 from Surrey to Newport – ACC on 70 which was achieved for the majority of the journeyAugust 17, 2025 at 1:45 pm #311414Can’t remember where I saw it but there is a battery pack either available just now or “coming soon” ( how often have we heard that) that is a mix of sodium and lithium batteries. The thinking is that when weather is really cold the sodium batteries would kick in and run the car as they are good down to minus 40 *C

So far, 650 miles in an Enyaq 85x, 4.2. It does depend how you drive the car. I prefer comfort or eco mode as it dampens throttle response, not to save energy but because its a nicer drive.

A/C used when it’s needed, temp set @19c recirculating when air con on (no point cooling outside air when it’s hot). Range is now 328 miles on full charge and ave 4.1 to 4.6kwh. Find setting regen on Number 2 gives better results, don’t mind using the brake pedal as and when needed. The Hill Start button active means the car doesn’t creep forward when stopped in traffic.
It dropped to 365m and 3.6kwh in freezing conditions in winter. Didn’t bother me as home charging at 7p kwh still makes it cheap to run. Do very few trips over 50 miles so home charging 98% of time. Always book our UK holidays with EV on site charging (Sykes Cottages) so no having to hang about. Only do around 5,000 miles a year now so EV driving suits us fine.

2005 - 2017 Honda CRV Exec 2.0dAugust 18, 2025 at 1:19 pm #311483With my Enyaq 85x SportLine I never achieved anything above 3.4 on long journeys. For example we came back from Czech Republic, doing 1,400 miles in total, averaging 46mph with 3.4 miles per kWh (see attached).
Which leads me to another point: despite having IONITY passport and paying only 36 cent per kW in Europe and one charge back in the UK at £0.46 per kW (I think), the total cost of charging for the whole trip was €150. Much more than I would expect from a modern ICE. That hit hard the pocket , as our previous trips to France were always free – the hotel we are staying provides the charging for free.

Conditions were near perfect for both journeys so I think this is about the best result for this type of journey. I reckon 4.3 might be the best I get for local journeys but still early days and if it stays this way I will be happy.

Even in a hybrid c50mpg, it’s still dearer at £165.
August 19, 2025 at 11:25 pm #311595Even if it was the same price, still comes out cheaper over time – you’re not doing that many 1400 mile journeys purely on public chargers a year.
Rest of the year you charge at home. Long journeys for EVs on public chargers are never that efficient price wise.
