Bit cheeky but does anyone know if Motability will pay for replacement keys?
I’ve managed to lose a set of keys, including for the car. I’d guess I’ll need the old key deleted from the car, a new key provided and programmed. Sounds like a £300 minimum to me. Anyone been through this before?

I can tell you from first hand experience about 18 months ago, no they won’t replace lost keys, neither would RSA insurance, I would imagine the new policy with Direct Line is the same. Motability do say you don’t need both sets when handing back the car and it won’t affect your good condition bonus. We bought an Apple Air tag for the remaining set of keys, this will help locate them if lost.

Living without two sets of keys makes life a bit too tricky as we’re often dropping off, parking the car and someone else is picking up later with the other set of keys. Of course, we could take the car back home each time but that’s just adding mileage and cost, so over time the cost of a new set of keys is worth it, despite the upfront costs.
So, might just chalk this one up to experience. First time in many years losing a set of keys.
March 22, 2024 at 7:36 pm #269056We looked into getting a spare, Skoda wanted almost £400 as did The AA Key Service. Small independent auto key specialist couldn’t do our car as it was too new. Timpson also do car keys quite reasonably, but again they couldn’t do ours.
March 22, 2024 at 7:41 pm #269057I have used this in the past. It’s very good. It used to be an annual amount of about £13 I think. Price has gone up now. Could be worth it for some.

Try calling the AA Key Assist team on 0330 162 3098 and they will give you a quote over the phone for coming out and cutting and programming a new key. You don’t have to be a member. They were less than half the cost of a main dealer quote for me.
March 23, 2024 at 9:24 am #269081Most mobile Locksmiths’s should be able to provide you with a new key. Cost around £120.00 programmed to the car.
March 23, 2024 at 12:50 pm #269103Having lost a key in the past that cost a fortune, I now subscribe to a policy called Keyfob. Costs £4 a month and they provide a fob you attach to the keys so you can track it and ping it if you misplace them. They also offer £100 reward to anyone who locates your keys. If you lose the keys, they recover you and your car and pay for your new key and any work needed done to your car locks.
nice to have the security and peace of mind.July 12, 2024 at 10:15 pm #284812Speaking of car keys …….
Dropped my daughter off at her volunteer job about 17 miles away, got most of the way to my friends house and noticed there was an orange key symbol showing on the dash!, thought the battery must be flat (only 6 months old) I was just wondering if it would be OK to continue when my daughter rang me and said “I have your keys” !!
I’m amazed the car let me drive off without a key in the car (Skoda Enyaq) let alone do about 10 miles! I had to turn round and go back. Luckily I hadn’t had to stop anywhere else on the way or I would have got out and then been stuck with no key to activate the car again!.
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!
July 12, 2024 at 10:31 pm #284808I’m a bit late to the party but where does motability say they don’t need both sets of keys? I’ve just lost one of mine ugh

They all do that and usually it flashes up on dash that the key isn’t in the vehicle, there is no limit on how far away you can drive but if you’d stopped and turned it of…. 😱 🚖

I don’t know where it’s actually in writing, but we lost our spare set and I rang Motability about getting a replacement and was told they don’t provide replacement keys but they also don’t require 2 sets when the car is handed back and it won’t affect good condition bonus. This was around 18 months ago.
July 13, 2024 at 2:24 pm #284845I’ve handed back 3 cars with only one set of keys and never had a problem. I keep the other set as a souvenir lol

And the person that buys it after you what about them, very hard to sell anyone a car that has only one key. Motability must be the only lease company that does not charge for lost keys at end of lease.

I find that quite disgusting ☹️
July 13, 2024 at 5:39 pm #284876Belfast4 for around 13k over three years I get some nice memories and a set of keys.
Mobility make a fortune out of us so I’m not worried about them. The dealer who sells the car gets a new set cut for around £100 and still makes a very nice profit, and new private customer gets a well looked after second hand car with two sets of keys.

July 13, 2024 at 8:04 pm #284882I think Des said that with tongue firmly in cheek.
July 13, 2024 at 10:26 pm #284889I’ve been unfortunate enough to have had two sets of keys stolen over the years, on both occasions RSA paid for full lock set replacements (subject to claim excess of course).
They didn’t even suggest I use the remaining key, maybe as it was a theft rather than a loss made the difference.
If I seem a little strange, that's because I am.

July 13, 2024 at 10:27 pm #284890Yeh stolen keys is a different thing how did they get stolen?
July 14, 2024 at 11:08 am #284894So I have found the keys and they were inside the car what a boob!
July 14, 2024 at 11:15 am #284895We were burgled and my car stolen, they also took Mrs Joe’s spare key with the intention of stealing it the next night. We realised and rang RSA who immediately had the car lifted and replaced the locks.

£100 who cuts and programmes new keys for £100. If they were charging you £350+vat for a new key would you keep one?

i don’t think he did.
