BBC – Electric car maker Tesla says it delivered a record 1.3m vehicles last year, 40% more than in 2021. It comes after the company delivered more than 405,000 vehicles in the last three months of 2022.
Those are obviously global figures but impressive all the same. It can only be a matter of time before Tesla comes onto the scheme, right?!

I agree, why do we have the £50k id5 but not the £47k model 3? Also, Tesla UK have an over supply of cars in the UK, they were overnight discounts in December to clear stock.
In years to come, I would say yes. Their USP seems to be that their cars have the best range and charging infrastructure and, as a result, those who want an EV and can afford them are most likely to choose a Tesla. Also (around here anyway) they are very popular in multi-car households, where a Tesla may sit on the drive alongside one or two ICE cars. In such households I suspect that, in most cases, the Tesla is the company car, primarily for tax reasons. A company car driver with a £70k Tesla will pay a hell of a lot less company car tax than a similar priced ICE car (well, for now anyway)
As the years go by, it has to be assumed that other manufacturers EV’s will achieve ranges that are much closer to ICE cars and obviously the charging infrastructure will improve, so Tesla’s USP will wain. All companies (not just car manufacturers) are very focussed on market share and Motability is a great option to address that.

Their range isn’t much better when you look at like for like battery capacities. I also understand that they are opening up their charging network.

I’m with you about the design. All their cars leave me cold. Bland as hell. Reminiscent of 1990’s hatchbacks. I’ve never driven one but have heard that build quality is well below most cars of comparable cost. As you say, it’s the tech that sells them, along with range and performance.
Tesla really doesn’t do anything for me except for the S and I can’t see that coming on. Maybe in a few years when the major manufacturers have got their act together and it’s struggling against them.
I would rather see the Hyundai ionic 5, Kia ev6 , polestar 2, Ford mach e and Genesis come on.
i doubt they will come on… their service is supposed to be pretty poor too

I’m sure Tesla do a lot of mobile repairs, if it can be done on site they come to you.
There are only 2 reasons I personally would buy a Tesla, range and the Supercharger network (but not at Christmas)!
Last year I got a bit silly and rented electric cars, the last one I had was a Model 3. I wouldn’t have one for 3 years, the controls are just odd. Obviously this is personal preference (and their infrastructure urinates on anything else electric) but for me, no. Takes all the fun out of driving.

The Model S will do just over 400 miles and unlikely to join the scheme
The Nio ET7 will do over 600 miles again unlikely to join the scheme.
The Tesla Model 3 standard range plus will do upto 315 miles more likely but doubtful to join the scheme.

I like to Kona, but I’d struggle to put 2 suitcases in the boot for holidays, I need to make my underpants last 3 days!
ive a folding scooter and hoist in my boot and still have some room so 2 cases should be manageable lol

When we travel we put 2 cases in the boot and the scooter on the back seat, when we get there we unload the boot and put the scooter in. The real problem is Mrs Joe’s wheelchair, I doubt it would fit, currently have Octavia estate.
Wheelchairs are difficult. My wife’s one the wheels cam off etc but it was still a difficult load in many cars.
Had a big Skoda estate at one time and it was ideal but even then it wasn’t an easy load probably due to height.

Yes it’s the height of the wheelchair, wheels come off but the height from the small front castor wheels to the top of the back must be around 80cm, laid flat in the boot we would need at least 100cm front to back in the boot.

Hi everyone,all I will say is don’t believe the hype! My daughter has been running a Tesla 3 for over twelve months now now she lives in London we are in the south west some 230 miles away .of the many times coming to us she has never done it without stopping to charge on the way .I am not sure how many service centres/dealerships there are but it’s not many and literally even the smallest problem seems to take weeks.and on a personal note anyone who has trouble with a low vehicle it’s possibly the lowest vehicle I’ve had to get in and out of in the last twenty years,and to finish off I can’t argue with the tech the general finish and paintwork is not in the same league as the Volvo I currently have

I’m not sure if this news makes it more or less likely to ever happen.
My personal view is that they will always be too expensive. I suspect the ID5’s inclusion will be fleeting (pun very much intended).

I have been driving EVs since 2015 and have owned three in total, my latest being a Tesla Model 3 long range AWD. I have also test driven the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6, plus a number of other EVs. The Tesla is light years ahead of the others for its Technology (updating usually monthly and bringing new features over the air) and whilst it does take some getting used to, is IMO a much better vehicle. All EVs lose 30% range on a motorway but the Tesla has ample easy to use superchargers. That said I only use them on a long journey and have a range of circa 330 miles. My wife who is a motability customer has the MGZS EV (old version) and it’s great, but a model Y would be fantastic for her, especially with the charging infrastructure and longer range, plus Tesla normally come to you for any issues. Build quality on my M3 is better than my previous BMW i3. All in all the Tesla is far superior but is a little minimalistic in the cabin, but that’s by design. My wife is always saying it’s the only car I’ve ever owned when I get out smiling every time I drive it. Sadly the M3 is not suitable for her, but a Model Y would be perfect if it ever comes on motability.
look I dont see the teslas coming on the scheme, which is a shame, but also let us get one thing straight, Tesla on model 3 on motorway at 70 returns 5.2 to 5.5 miles per kwh, non of the other brands can touch that at, which means your paying less per mile, for example the megane with a 17kw less battery and claimed lightest in the field of ev and a car that is lighter can do max 3.5 to 3.6 at that speed. It were tesla does knock others down a peg, their motors are much more efficent that all the brands.
Given that the prices of both new and used Tesla’s have been falling steeply, plus the fact that they are developing smaller / cheaper cars, I think it’s only a matter of time before Tesla will appear on the scheme. Plus, of course, whilst I don’t agree with it (as they aren’t an environmental charity), Motability seem to be giving a lot of emphasis to EV’s at the expense of other more affordable options.
