I have had my Kona EV for nearly two years (changing September 2024).

I recently had a quick look around  new cars and was surprised and disappointed that a lot of manufacturers are charging motability customers for metallic paint

this seems a bit short sighted as a car’s retained value can be massively affected by a car’s colour.

I remember speaking to a BMW salesman once who said there was one particular colour of a 5 series was a big nail in the coffin for resale values.  especially nowadays when you often have a choice for interior colour as well.

the AP’s are big enough without paying even more for a colour of your choice.  that’s why o am seriously looking at the Megane next time.

      Cheers, all the very best

Nissan have a whole bunch of colours free for the scheme,  where applicable only the split colours are at extra cost.  Skoda have everything bar the base and ultimate colours, whatever they are per model but the majority of colours are on scheme.

I’m pretty sure most manufacturers have a fairly wide colour scheme available.  However, I’ve seen that Ford are offering the Mustang in Black or white, anything else comes with a small price.

I have never been charged for metallic paint on any of my motability cars. You usually have a range to choose from including metallics. However if you want something that is not offered, then you pay towards that.

          https://www.motability.co.uk/get-support/faqs/which-colours-are-there/

Which colours can I get a vehicle in?
Ask your dealer which colours and paint options you can have for each vehicle model on the Scheme.

You might be able to get solid or metallic paint options at no extra cost.

Special addition or premium paint options might cost extra.

Standard metallic paint is included with the Motability lease, but not the special metallic colours. Which does make sense.
At one point and I don’t think it has changed,mMotability had agreed that cars with no rear sensors and no camera, woukd have sensors fitted as well as standard metallic paint

Given that other Renault cars DO NOT offer free colours, I looked at the Arkana, and they have base colour and others are extra.

I reckon the free colour choice on the Megane is just to draw people in to the new model.

I hope that in August the Megane will still offer those free colours.

Back in the day (with BMW at least) you couldn’t purchase solid colours!

                Edit: on Motability

Bever had to pay for metallics unless it was a special colour such as pearlescent or solid, although some dealers throw them in sometimes.

Citroën offered all metallic for free but I went for Pearl White which was £200 extra (retail £850 not £650) but upon collection the manager had told salesman he didn’t agree and instructed him not to charge the additional cost – BONUS

Hi Garry v, which dealer was it because  both Toomeys Basildon and Stallantis and you both need me to pay  the extra £200 with no chance of not paying it, I was told this was Citroens rules not theres (load of dealer spin again I fear)

                        Hi Roy

It was Duff Morgan in King’s Lynn which is now closed but they still have a dealership in Norwich. The salesman had added the £200 on my order and was as surprised as me when manager told him it wasn’t fair to charge me, I’m not complaining but I think I just fell lucky TBH

Thanks for that Gary, looks like just another case of dealers treating Motability customers as a cash cow take the money and give less than careing service, was a time when a dealership motability ‘salesman’ (they don’t really sell us a vehicle we almost always know what we want and have done our homework so just a test drive and place the order, not bad for moving vehicles on with little work, oh and don’t tell me the dealer only makes £50 per Motability lease as stated before on this forum that is just not true all dealerships have there own commission rates so don’t feel sorry for the poor salesman only making a small rate it’s not true)would treat you as any other customer and give help where needed and keep you up to date with true facts. So you would expect better service from any company who ‘prides’ themselves on Motability customer service, but in truth once the dealer passes the order on it is out of there hands so whatever they tell you it must come from some where, it would be nice if we could know where to get ‘real’ up to date information on our orders and true build times and not just repeated lines like delays due to covid, chips, shipping, why not just be truthfull and say we don’t know when you vehicle will be here at the showroom for you to collect until it reaches us.
