Not a BMW, but my Seat delivery took 18 weeks instead of the quoted 12, and I got  £250 from VAG customer services, you don’t ask, you don’t get lol

Your much discussed 21 plate is at risk of being rather passé, if the rather protracted delays continue.

I just don’t get how it can be locked in confirmed start then to be knocked back again communicating with dealership has been none existent am seriously annoyed now a friend of mine has purchased same car not on motorbility cash buyer she ordered hers a day before I did she’s had hers weeks from exactly same dealership speaks volumes that to me don’t think I will ever order with them again even if they are closest to me

Shellie, you have an extremely rare but fortunate proof that they have treated you differently. Send the dealership your friends order number and call them out for it. I’d be very interested to see what defence they use for that ?

Sorry to hear that you are having yet more problems Shellie. In reality, I think that your total lead time will be the norm for most people. The dates that you had been given seemed optimistic to me, based on what my dealer had told me. I only managed to get our X1 in 4 months (ordered end March, delivery end July)  because the dealer nabbed a cancelled order from another dealership that wasn’t even in their group. Perhaps your dealer did this for your friend as colour choice obviously makes no difference to lead times.

In spite of getting this cancelled order, our predicted delivery was pushed back from end July to end September, but my dealer contacted BMW Production Operations (or something like that) who agreed to reinstate the build slot to ensure end July delivery. From my experience, it seems that good dealers can influence the build date, so it might be worth asking if they can do this for you, especially if you cite your friends lead time.

I just don’t get how I can be told from genius that my build was definitely confirmed and have screen shots to prove that to now be told delays I will keep trying to get the person on chat again also I’m ringing me dealership on Monday had no correspondence from them at all very shocking service for a new customer like I said before vertu motors won’t be getting my custom in future I will drive hour and half to get my next car if I chose bmw again even a soap opera couldn’t write the hassle I’ve had ordering one car with no extras wouldn’t care if I wasn’t told it was confirmed that’s bit that’s bothering me might complain to bmw themselves as it was one of their people not dealership that told me

Hi Shellie – I’m certainly not trying to defend your dealer as their communication with you has been poor. However, we are in exceptional times with most car manufacturers experiencing delays in production due to the semiconductor chip shortage. This includes BMW with the X1 as one of my options was deleted because of it. Obviously I don’t know the details of your order, but I can’t help but wonder whether at the time that you were told that your order was ‘confirmed’ it was actually at BMW status 1200 (Scheduled for Production) rather than Status 5000 (Confirmed for Production – Customer Spec Locked Down) or even Status 5055 (Confirmed by Production Control). Do the screenshots that you have show which of these stages your order was at?

In my case, the dates at stage 1200 (Scheduled for Production) changed and, like you, the expected delivery date moved from end July to end Sep. It was only when my dealer emailed BMW Production Control (that might not be the exact name) that it got reinstated back to the previously scheduled build date. I was sent the response from them (which I’ve deleted now that I have the car and cannot find) where they said that they “had managed to reinstate the previously scheduled build date”. I’m just trying to help you given that I have knowledge of the intricacies of the BMW order system. Clearly your dealer hasn’t been as helpful as mine was, but by knowing the right questions to ask and how it all works (and that it can be influenced by a helpful dealer) you might be able to get somewhere. BMW Genius can’t influence anything. They will just tell you the current status, whatever that is and, as you have found out, that can change. Hope that helps.

No they didn’t say a code but I asked the lad was it definitely doing to be started then and he said yes definitely I’m trying to go on chat till I get him again and I’m gonna ask him what’s happening everything with the dealership has been rubbish really like I’ve said previously i have never in all the motorbility cars ive had felt like I do now about a dealership before ive even had car delivered!! I am very grateful for everyone on here I just wish someone ie bmw or dealership would tell the truth instead of getting hopes of people up then to knock you back ive had really bad year with parents health mine etc that’s without COVID and I was finally looking forward to something now I’m getting where I don’t care ? but it’s nice to be able to vent somewhere that people understand struggles that we all that need motorbility cars go through like I said I really appreciate help

No problem Shellie. I’d be feeling the same as you if I was in that situation. I fear that you are wasting your time on BMW Chat though. They can’t influence anything and probably won’t tell you the status code, which you need to know. I strongly suspect that when you last spoke to them your car was scheduled for production (code 1200). Those dates usually don’t change (hence why they probably told you that it was ‘confirmed’) but in the current climate they are changing. See if they will give you the status code. If you are a lower number than 5000 then unfortunately even your end of Sep delivery date still isn’t confirmed and could change again.

Your dealer will of course know the exact details and mine was sending me regular screenshots of the order status screen. I find with car dealers (who are renowned for BS) that if you make them aware from the outset that you know how it all works (build allocations etc) then they treat you with a bit more respect as they know that they can’t BS you as easily. I have lost count of the number of people on this forum who rightly complain about long lead times and lack of info from dealers when it is obvious that their dealer hasn’t even placed the order with the manufacturer due to lack of build allocation slots. If the customer doesn’t know the right questions to ask then the dealer will rarely, if ever, own up to this. It’s just the way that the industry works, unfortunately.

Spot on Tim. Motability customers often think that when they have been to the dealer and the ‘order’ later shows on the Motability website that the car has actually been ordered. It hasn’t. It’s just admin. All dealers will take an ‘order’ at any time, but can only place it with the manufacturer (the actual order) when they have build slot allocations. Sometimes this can be a month, or even several months, later. That’s why different people get wildly different lead times from different dealers for the same car, as dealers will almost never volunteer this information as they don’t want you to go elsewhere. So it is exactly as you say!

Of course, exactly the same thing happens to private buyers as well. Like most people, I have learned about all of this the hard way, but now that I know how it all works I ask very probing questions before any dealer gets an order from me (Motability or otherwise). You can see the surprise in their face when they realise that you know how it all works and it makes it very difficult for them to tell you bare faced lies as opposed to just being selective with the information that they give you!

I also think that in the car industry if it’s a bad woman then you do get a load of bs we had an insignia from a well known dealer I took it in as it had a fault they argued with me there was nothing wrong for 5 times I took it back and they said same my husband went on 6 th time and it was different story they rectified it straight away even our Volvo we had issues with wipers and washer spray they say they changed everything have charged motorbility but they are same wipers how we know we marked them, I did think that things may be different now after 5 years but sadly it’s shocking how sexist places are nowadays but that’s a whole new story lol

I would be asking them what build code status the order is at. If they are difficult, or you sense BS, ask specifically “Has it progressed beyond 1200 Scheduled for Production”? Ideally, ask for a screenshot of the order screen, as this will show you the current status and will also show you the date that the present status was assigned. You are then dealing with facts. Good luck.

Hi Shellie. Sorry to hear that you are getting nowhere fast. Here’s an example of the screenshots that my dealer was sending me regularly. This is what you need from your dealer to see if what they are telling you is true. The key line is the one that says ‘Current Event’ as it shows the exact status of your order and the date that the status last changed.

Your experience makes me appreciate what superb service I had from my dealer. I used the salesperson who sold me a new 5 Series privately some years ago, based upon my good experience that time. It’s a great shame that so many sales people don’t realise that if they provide great service customers will return to them, whereas if you have poor service you will go out of your way to avoid them next time.

Hi Shellie. I don’t think that there’s a code 112. Do you mean 1200? If so, that means scheduled for production. Unfortunately, that’s not a confirmed date and it can change (mine did). It’s only when it goes to ‘5000 Confirmed for Production – Customer Spec Locked Down’ that you have a firm build date. Not what you want to hear but that’s how it works unfortunately. Not adding any options doesn’t speed things up unfortunately.

Also I was assured that they now have Android Auto, but i couldn’t see that on the spec, only Apple car play.

Hi IanH. That’s exactly the same model that we have. Ours took just under 4 months from ordering to delivery, but that was because the dealer managed to nab a cancelled order slot that was already in the queue. I would think that you do have a chance of delivery by the end of the year – probably 50/50. If you haven’t done so already, I’d have a read through all of this thread as you will need to ask your dealer the right questions to ensure that they had available build allocation slots and that your order has actually progressed, as most dealers aren’t upfront about this and people often don’t realise until a month (or several months) have gone by and they haven’t heard anything! I can’t answer the question about Android Auto I’m afraid as all our devices are Apple.

Like you, we moved to an X1 from a Tiguan. In fact we’d had four Tiguans (three from Motability, one private). Overall, the X1 is a far better car than the Tiguan although there are a few ‘BMW haters’ on this forum who will have you believe that it’s the worst car on the scheme ?. It’s far more refined than the Tiguan (the BMW engine is whisper quiet), it has a very premium finish versus the utilitarian Tiguan and, most importantly of all, the tech all works significantly better than the VW systems. There are a few areas where the Tiguan is better (such as standard seats) and it has more standard kit, but it’s quantity over quality. If it’s your first BMW you are in for a treat. They are fantastic drivers cars and the balance of performance and economy is incredible. Any other questions feel free to ask.
