My story started around twenty years ago, when I was about thirty years old. I was working as a dustman for the local council, and I was coming home after work and falling asleep almost straight away. It is a very physical job, but I knew I shouldn’t be so knackered that I fell asleep even with three kids around making a lot of noise. But I muddled through and I could feel myself getting more and more exhausted. I took a weeks holiday and came back to work and my driver whom I had been friends with a long time, asked to speak to me in private as I was the chargehand he found it quite difficult to tell me that they had finished the rounds the previous week at least an hour earlier each day. I knew he was right, so I sought out medical advice and was eventually told that I had muscle wastage in both legs and they thought I probably had fibromyalgia which was later diagnosed. To cut a long story a bit shorter, things went on and I was medically retired at thirty eight. With my illness progressing fast. So I still have muscle wasting in both legs, fibromyalgia, Sjögren’s syndrome as well as Chronic pain syndrome and then developed diabetes. I also suffered from mental health issues brought on by having to retire at such a young age, all the feelings of being useless to my family etc etc. (of course my family never felt that way about me).
So onto what vehicle I now need, I need a vehicle with a higher seat and with a big enough boot to take either my scooter or my manual wheelchair. So an SUV is an ideal size for me, hence having the Ford Kuga on order. My Grand C max has been a good car, but over the last year it has become harder to get in and out of, but I stuck with it and hopefully the Kuga will do me for the next three years. We couldn’t afford much for an AP so again the Kuga was my choice. My wife has been brilliant and will always put my wheelchair or scooter in and out without ever complaining and has been my rock over the years.
