A strange approach, as these petitions are about trying to influence government decisions and, unless I’ve missed something, I don’t think that the imposition of these smart boxes is anything to do with the government. Isn’t it a decision between Motability and Direct Line to (supposedly) clamp down on abuse and reduce the risks from less experienced drivers? To be clear, I’m not in favour of an extension of these boxes. I recall when my youngest daughter had to have one for the first year after she passed her test and I felt very on edge whenever I was driving the car as it was constantly scoring my driving. Even driving with extreme caution I could never get 100% and the fact that there were consequences if I inadvertently did something wrong took the pleasure out of driving.
I think the benefit to the Government is the same as excluding so called Top Makes and making disabled people like myself, pay the full AP with vat for a larger more suitable car that meets my needs.
The Drive Smart Box, appeals to the kick the lazy and greedy Motability customer, attitude who’s voters who the Government’s votes are after.
It has nothing to do with the younger less experienced drivers, as it will affect drivers with over 11 years experience of driving and potentially of any age.
Having spoken to the Drive Smart Department, as soon as you put someone under 30 on your driving insurance, then all existing drivers will have to be using the Box irrespective of when our contract started/starts, which will be a major headache for people like me with PA’s (carers) who will mostly be over 30 and are suddenly monitored for their driving, if someone under 30 starts..
