As there’s quite a bit of conflicting information on this thread (in fairness, not helped by me) and this issue affects me directly as we are also leaving Motability, I thought that the following update, based on a phone call to Motability Direct Line Insurance this afternoon, and some revised quotes that I’ve run with Compare the Market, might be of interest.
As my wife (who is the benefit recipient) can no longer drive, I am the named driver. Although I hadn’t had an accident for decades, unfortunately I had an argument with a skip on my drive at the end of 2021 (don’t ask 😳) so I had run insurance quotes assuming that I’d get No Claims Discount for the 4 years since then. Like @chastw the quote that had attracted me most, whilst not the cheapest, was Admiral Gold at a cost of £658 fully comprehensive with £250 voluntary and £500 compulsory excess. This is for a new BMW X5 M60i with a retail price of £110k and is the highest insurance group (group 50).
I called Motability Direct Line insurers this afternoon to find that they do not provide any No Claims Discount letters for anyone (policyholder or named driver) but they will issue a letter (or email if you prefer) of your claims history, which many insurers will accept.
Having established this I have re-run the insurance quotes, this time saying that I had zero no claims history. When I did this it enabled me to input how long I had driven another car that wasn’t mine since the last claim, so I could answer 4 years. I also inputted the detail and cost of the 2021 ‘skipgate’ claim. Finally, I clicked on ‘get quotes’ and whilst waiting I could feel my blood pressure rising, expecting the £658 to suddenly become around £5k! Thankfully, I needn’t have worried. Still with Admiral Gold (even though still not the cheapest) the revised quote is £686 – a massive increase of £28!
Hopefully my experience will save others considering leaving Motability the hours stress that I have had. If you use Compare the Market you will hopefully be able to input your driving record and even with zero no claims history still be able to get an affordable quote 🤞
