This is to prevent the key from constantly communicating with the car.
VAG keys don’t work like this. They turn themselves off if there is no movement, so no communication. @JoJoe – yeah, I think swapping out the battery every 12 months is ‘normal’. It would be interesting to know how frequent others change their battery.
Ditto What @DumfriesDik says, the key goes to sleep if no movement after a number of seconds. You know when it’s awake as the red light flashes.
