The problem even discussing people’s disabilities, is that disabled have opinions as well as able bodied is once you start judging people that may have a severe or less severe disability or they could have an unseen disability it becomes like god who is decided is worthy or not. Take for instance a few years ago our local council used to run meals on wheels and when the weather was bad there was a very old lady and a old man who were both disabled and the council decided to offer during the snowy roads a meal to the man and even though had to walk right by the ladies bungalow no meal she saw this and was very upset. It appeared that the council was judging who was worthy and who was not and I found that outrageous.
Whilst understanding your sentiment, whether we like it or not the harsh reality is that these judgements have to be made. If that doesn’t happen, then anybody and everybody who applies for disability benefits will get them, whether justified or not. However, these judgements shouldn’t be made by journalists, those who comment online (including ourselves!) or by the court of public opinion, but by trained assessors working to set criteria.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the huge rise in those claiming disability benefits in recent years has happened at a time when face to face assessments have become the exception rather than the rule. How anyone can determine that someone should be put on disability benefits without seeing them face to face is beyond me, and it doesn’t help matters when people are posting online tutorials on how to game the current system!
