Deceleration increases the amount of oxygen following through the engine and exhaust system. This raises the temperature of the PPF to a high temperature, which ignites and burns off the soot.
The procedure is opposite to clearing a diesel DPF where you maintain >3000rpm in a low gear at steady continuous speed.
