Currently away on a break and had to have a tyre replaced by Kwik-fit. They have replaced a Continental PremiumContact 6 with a Continental EcoContact 6 which has a slightly different tread pattern. Is this ok as I have always thought you needed same tyre as a pair?

Providing it is the same size, speed rating, ‘summer or winter’ and construction type (normally radial) it is fine. Even differing manufacturers tyres providing they are the same size/spec are fine and legal. Often tyre manufacturers update their tyres so older ones are no longer available. Hence newer versions, often with a different pattern are fitted.

It’ recommended the same tyre is fitted across each axle but, its not a legal requirement as Big Dave suggests.

You might have read, It’ illegal to fit different tread paterns across the same axle. However this is only the case with summer and  winter tyre’s fitted on the same axle etc. This isn’t allways clear online.

The big difference between the PremiumContact 6 and the EcoContact 6, is the latter is an eco friendly tyre, whoch uses Conti’s Green Chili compound.
