After I posted I received a phone call from the Skoda chap and I mentioned about what people were saying about the noise problem, so he is arranging for a new model to be brought to his branch so I can test drive that.
As you said about coming from a Mercedes similarly if you have a Rolls or Bentley any other vehicle is going to be noisier.
People are different, to one, a car may seem quiet but to another person it could be the noisiest car that they have ever been in.
