We’ve had a huge number of game changing batteries all at concept stage and all requiring a good few years to even know if they’re viable for mass production.  I’m convinced that in the times ahead people will look back at the best batteries available now and snigger at the ancient technology.  A bit like the 3 mile an hour motor vehicles.  The problem is I don’t expect to be around to see it.

It would be amazing to see something that used chemicals that are not rare and don’t need mining but reality is that unless a new mineral can be created and grown in a lab, batteries will still need large scale mining and the damage that incurs.   All that said, it’s still better than the damage caused by pumping liquids out of the ground, burning off gasses on site and then piping those liquids thousands of miles, with refining processes using more energy and creating more waste.
