mike700 is exactly right the money they attract to the uk is huge and as he says getting rid off them wouldnt necessarily save much if anything as most of the royal residences would still have to be maintained plus the cost of replacing them with a president or what ever. you can bet they wouldnt be cheaper. i am in favour of charles plans to streamline things esp sidelining andrew who is a disaster. ive met and even worked with many of the royal family at various times during my 20 years in the military and i have to say i am a huge fan of anne who must be the hardest working one out there and definately takes after her father and doesnt suffer fools, i bet she gave andrew short shrift i would have loved to be a fly on the wall that day. plus the duchy of cornwall contributes loads now in taxes and contributes in other ways the country could lose that as william or whoever could adopt the attitude of reducing his tax liabilities in a variety of ways.
As you state, they are indeed our Palaces, houses, property etc.& just like anything else that belongs to us, when it needs repairing, we repair it-
To maintain or increase it’s value & to save it ( for the Nation)
Just because the Royal Palaces and homes Etc., are owned by the nation ( us ) however, doesn’t mean that they should be open to any Tom, Dickhead or Harry to just walk in whenever they feel like!
Tom & Harry realise that there are matters of security, safety etc., stopping unfettered access to any of our publicly owned buildings..
Only Dickhead thinks that he can just walk in ( & walk over ) to anywhere he likes, without check, but that’s because he has no perception of values, whether historical or material.
Demolishing the nations assets would be just another misguided , short sighted and very very short term ‘ potential ‘solution to access more funds, whereas investing in our assets to enhance their value makes so much more economical sense!
It is becoming clearer by the year, that most of the more responsible people in all political parties now accept that a well run economy is the way to pay our way, not repeat NOT by destroying (as per those ISIS loonies in Iraq) or selling off our assets
