Most of the 4×4’s on the retail market have little advantage over their 2 wheel drive equivalents especially with the standard road tyres. For many it is a belief that the car would be “safer” with it.
After some serious car crashes caused by other people, I had the difficult task of convincing my wife to get back in a vehicle. A major ploy was to detail all the safety features and saying the car had 4 wheel drive was part of the story to reassure her.
But apart from that in the 30 years of having 4×4’s (often not by choice). I can’t say I have ever really needed to use its capability even in snow, ice, mud and torrential rain, steep hills and drives.
