Mike 700 Pray tell where you obtained that information because it goes against everything I have read on the net. I do hope it’s not from one of those dodgy right wing sites or even worse from of the right wing press. I’ll hold fire till you present your source, but as I stated above Scotland is recognised as a Country by all the major respected information sites, including Encyclopaedia Brittanica, Wikipaedia, Oxford dictionary et al. As I stated to Kezo it’s also recognised as a Country by most of the international sporting organisations, which is why it plays internationals. In my experience the people who question the status of Scottish or indeed Welsh national identity tend to be right wing zealots living in the past, like the Victorian time traveller Rees Mogg. But as I said I will wait with baited breath for the source of your “article”. By the way I doubt a serious article would include the words “tickety boo” on any serious analysis

I have tried to keep away from politics , in my contributions to this thread , and where political interests and indeed interference is obvious ,I have largely played it down, and I have no intention of using it deliberately as a weapon , however, for the sake of honesty , sometimes opinion and fact need to be included.

Right, left, central will each raise their ugly heads in a debate/ thread of this nature, and when they do, I will attempt to decapitate with fact rather than opinion , and as you , Daf, rely so much on Google + Wikipedia I quote from Wiki

The Darien scheme was an unsuccessful attempt, backed largely by investors of the Kingdom of Scotland, to gain wealth and influence by establishing New Caledonia, a colony in the Darién Gap on the Isthmus of Panama, in the late 1690s. The plan was for the colony, located on the Gulf of Darién, to establish and manage an overland route to connect the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The backers knew that the first sighting of the Pacific Ocean by Balboa was after crossing the isthmus through Darién.
The attempt at settling the area did not go well; more than 80% of participants died within a year, and the settlement was abandoned twice.[1][2] There are many explanations for the disaster. Rival claims have been made suggesting that the undertaking was beset by poor planning and provisioning; by divided leadership; by a lack of trade with local indigenous tribes or neighbouring Dutch and English colonies;[3] by devastating epidemics of tropical disease; widespread opposition to the scheme from commercial interests in England;[3] and by a failure to anticipate a military response from the Spanish Empire. It was finally abandoned in March 1700 after a siege by Spanish forces, which also blockaded the harbour.[4]

“””As the Company of Scotland was backed by approximately 20% of all the money circulating in Scotland, its failure left the entire Scottish Lowlands in financial ruin””””

Political opinion is not no.1  in my posts – I try to simply deal in facts?
