Don’t know what you’re selling Jojoe but my uncle sells clothing and fashion related stuff to EU customers without any problem. At least he says there’s no problem. I know his goods go via the Netherlands. I think he sells through Amazon or eBay.
He may have registered for VAT in those countries. I stopped selling on Amazon due to fees and competition driving prices into the ground, but I believe they may have developed a scheme where they handle the vat for you.
