Got a 6ft fibre optic tree doesn’t make a noise like @Jojoe does, but no longer goes up. I don’t have cats like @joss, rather my daughter likes to pull it over just the same.
I now have a 2ft branch style with twinkle twinkle leds that hangs on the wall. Will probably put up at weekend.
@Joje spray some electrical contact clean or a drop of WD40 on the shaft close to where it gois in the motor.
