Hi all, Hunting around for my first motability car and wait times all around seem to be long, annoyingly so! Quick question for any experts around – does motability only apply to brand new factory ordered cars, or does it also apply to any new, unused, unregistered vehicles? (as long as they’re on the list so to speak) Just wondering if I can apply any leverage at dealers – just starting out looking around but a couple have new vehicles listed for sale online yet when I’ve asked about those vehicles on motability have been told they would have to place a new order as it’s motability. Next dealer with advertised stock I might pretend to be a cash buyer for a vehicle they have advertised, see how far they want to take it (and if I can get one from immediate stock) and see what they say when I advise it’s for motability instead – unless there’s some commission deal they lose out on it’s odd if they want to sell for one customer and not the other. Or maybe they’re chatting ish and don’t really have the stock they are advertising. Any thoughts or experience with dealers not wanting to give up their stock? Thanks in advance for any comments

You will most likely find the ‘factory order’ stipulation applies to all fleet sales (which Motability as a fleet buyer are classed as).

Dealers make a lot more profit and certain bonuses on retail sales than on fleet sales and with the shortage of vehicles in the supply chain still extant, it is no surprise dealers prefer to sell vehicles to retail customers.

Very occasionally dealers may offer cancelled Motability orders or over stocked vehicles (if you can find them) to Motabilty/Fleet customers but these maybe few and far between.

A few dealers sometimes advertise in-stock vehicles available to Motability customers on certain ‘Motability related’ facebook groups or in the ‘Deals & Offers’ sticky on this site. However you may have to travel a fair distance (twice  – once to order and once to collect) to get one.
