With the criticism of JLR above, I must say my LR Discovery, now approaching 17 months old and with 14k miles on the clock hasn’t missed a beat. It has fired up first time, every time and kept going. The only time the bonnet opens is once a week to check the oil, water, screen wash levels etc. So far, only the screen wash has needed topping up.

None of the fleet of Land rovers on our farms have had any problems either. So, not all are unreliable. Perhaps they just need to be driven off-road, up and down farm tracks etc once in a while and not used solely as ‘Chelsea tractors!

My Discovery will be in for a slightly easier life now as I inherited an 11 month old Mercedes GLB AMG 4 Matic diesel Auto a month ago and use it mainly when I don’t intend to be going off-road. I still haven’t got used to the auto gear selection using on the right-hand steering wheel stalk though. In the month that I have had it, has been to the Mercedes dealership twice now as the instrument screen keeps going blank at irregular intervals. I know that my late relative who originally bought it new had the same problem and the dealership never got to the root cause of the issue.

So, my personal finding is that a Mercedes is less reliable than a Land Rover!
